Tikkun Leil Shavuot Schedule

ENGLISH

11:30 PM – 12:30 AM

We will examine the complex path toward freedom and redemption, beginning with the enslavement in Egypt, continuing to the story of the spies, and culminating with the narrative of the daughter of Zelaphehad. We will place particular emphasis on the role of women leaders: the remarkable “daughters” who help to spark freedom within the hearts and minds of the people.

What’s the difference between the God of the Bible and the God of the Talmud? Who was the last man to see God? And how do we balance love and fear in our relationship with the Divine? Exploring the omnipotence and vulnerability of God, through the talmudic tale of R. Yishmael and Shakespeare’s King Lear.

12:40 AM – 1:40 AM

What does it mean to “embody” the Torah? How can the human being steeped in knowledge or observance be a kind of living Torah? From a first-century midrash about Joseph’s bones, to strange rituals surrounding the death of Torah scholars, we will explore the ways the Rabbis imagine and conceptualize the relationship between Torah, our bodies and the larger purpose of our lives.

1:50 AM – 2:50 AM

Throughout Jewish history there have been countless nonviolent communal disputes , however there were also disputes that deteriorated into violence and even civil war. This shiur will focus on two such historical moments as described in Jewish texts, the first in the year 67 BCE and the second one in 937CE. In one case the mediators succeeded and a breakout of violence was prevented, in the other the mediators failed and civil war broke out. What can we learn from these two critical cases to help prevent and mitigate growing tensions within Israeli society today?

What accounts for the success of certain franchises and can this help us to understand the success of the first century rabbis at Yavneh who created Judaism as we know it?

3:00-4:00

This shiur will examine a beautiful midrash that explores the meaning of the Torah being given at Mount Sinai from fire. Its surprising conclusions make a comment about human nature and the principle of moderation. This timeless message is of particular relevance today.
