Alyssa Silva recently assumed a new role – assistant executive director at Houston Hillel. Silva arrived at Houston Hillel one year ago as director of Jewston, Houston Hillel’s community for Jewish twentysomethings (graduate students and young professionals).

Silva will continue as Houston Hillel’s lead professional for Jewston, but will take on additional responsibilities related to development and administration.

Rabbi Kenny Weiss, Houston Hillel’s executive director, said, “I am very excited that Alyssa has become a greater partner for me and Houston Hillel. Alyssa’s new title recognizes her ability to foster relationships with all of Houston Hillel’s stakeholders. I am also eager for Houston Hillel to benefit from the insights Alyssa is gaining from her master’s degree program.”

Silva graduated from the University of Arizona, where she received her bachelor’s degree in Religious Studies and Judaic Studies. She also earned a certificate in Jewish Experiential Education from the Pardes Institute of Jewish Studies. Earlier this summer Silva began earning her MA in Jewish Nonprofit Management at Hebrew Union College-Jewish Institute of Religion’s Zelikow School of Jewish Nonprofit Management.

“I am thrilled to transition to the role of assistant executive director at Houston Hillel,” said Silva. In addition to overseeing the Jewston program, I will help guide our undergraduate programming and relationship-building. Houston Hillel’s diverse population and wide reach across Houston is unlike any other Hillel in the world. It is an honor to be able to steward the Greater Houston community in support of our efforts and continue to shine that light of diversity all around us.

“Over the next couple of years at Houston Hillel,” Silva continued, “I plan to help innovate new opportunities that will enable the young Jewish people of Houston to cultivate Jewish friendships, ‘Do Jewish’ in their own homes, and create everlasting relationships with their Jewish community. I’m excited to listen to what our young professionals, graduate students and undergraduates need. I want Houston Hillel and Jewston to meet them where they are, and to be the outstretched support system they need in good times and bad. I also look forward to taking what I am learning in my master’s program and implementing these practices into Houston Hillel’s mission, vision and values.

“Houston Hillel has given me the opportunity to grow academically, professionally and personally in the Jewish organizational world, which will allow me to grow in the fantastic work that Jewish nonprofit organizations fulfill every day.”
