Parsha Kedoshim

  1. Hashem told Moshe that the children of Israel must be holy. Why?

To follow Hashem's ways, for He is Holy.

  2. When a peace offering was sacrificed, by when did it have to be completely eaten?

By the end of the second day or it was to be destroyed.

  3. When you reap the harvest of your land, you are to leave what for whom?

The corner of the field and the gleanings of the field for the poor and the stranger.

  4. The wages of a hired servant must be paid by when?

At the end of the day; they may not be withheld over the night.

  5. How do you interpret Hashem's command that we may not put a stumbling block before the blind?

Various answers are acceptable. One answer could be that we may not take advantage of one who is less knowledgeable than we.

  6. In a judgement between a wealthy and a poor person, who is to be favored? Explain.

Neither; only justice is to be done -- not the wealthy person due to his influence or the poor person because he needed it or was the underdog.

  7. Hashem forbids us to be a talebearer; neither shall we stand idly by the blood of our neighbor. What does this mean?

Lashon Hara is described as murder; a person's reputation is often considered more important than his life. Embarrassing another is like drawing blood; note blushing.

  8. What is meant by "thou shalt surely rebuke thy neighbor and not bear sin because of him"?

Hashem commands us to advise with our neighbor if he is not following Hashem's commandments, to let him know the potential consequences of his ways. We must do this in a kind and loving manner.

  9. Describe the process of planting and harvesting fruit trees in the Land.

We are forbidden to eat the fruit during the first 4 years. During the 4th year, all the fruit is considered fit for Hashem and holy, thus not to be eaten; fruit may be eaten in the 5th year.

  10. Hashem commands that the stranger shall be treated the same as whom? Why?

The homeborn; for we were strangers in the land of Egypt and must remember what that was like.

  11. According to this week's parasha, what will be the penalty if B'nai Yisrael does not follow Hashem's commandments?

They will be vomited out of the land.
