THE WEEK WHICH FOLLOWS THE DEATH OF TWO STUDENTS IN JERUSALEM.

While moving through a horrific week of identifying the remains of his students, informing their parents, accompanying their bodies home to America, and presiding over their funerals on both coasts, Rabbi Daniel Landes, Director and Rosh Yeshivah of the Pardes Institute in Jerusalem, found forbearance and solace in what he describes as "so much strength and hesed (righteousness) of Pardes students and alumnae, as well as the entire Jewish community."

"We focus on our vulnerabilities. Yet, I saw incredible strength from doctors, nurses, students, friends and families who refuse to give up on humanity, and want to be called on to be strong and help in some way," Rabbi Landes commented while in San Diego. He had just arrived from Harrisburg, PA where he presided over the funeral of his student, Ben Blutstien, to next preside over the funeral of his student, Marla Bennett.

"I learned from my teacher, Rav Soloveitchik, that the Jewish position at the time of tragedy is, 'How can we repair and rebuild?'" Rabbi Landes said.

"This tragedy has only served to strengthen my resolve in the importance of our work at Pardes. Without Jewish education, there is no Jewish culture. Without Jewish culture, there is no Israel, and there is no strong American Jewish community. Ben and Marla were studying at Pardes to be the Jewish teachers of tomorrow. Their future was to have been pivotal educators in American Jewish Day Schools.

"While attention is focused on terror, hospitals, military and politics, it is also our job to be focused on the long run--the future of the Jewish world, its fiber, its soul and its existence, based upon the continuance of Jewish culture. And yet, while we focus on the future, we must continually be vigilant with our students regarding their safety. On the first day of orientation, we provide ground rules of where to go and not to go. We disseminate on a regular basis travel advisories, emergency phone numbers and other contacts. Students are required to check in with teachers and staff before going out as well as after an incident has occurred. There is a sophisticated security system within our building. We're doing everything we can given the present realities. But the fact is, Pardes students come and stay because they have a serious ideological reason to be in Israel and to learn Torah. Ben and Marla were two such students," Rabbi Landes explained.

"Pardes," Rabbi Landes continued, "is not just an Israeli institution. It is not just an American institution. It is on the front line of the Israel/Diaspora relationship. We are linking the Jews of the Diaspora with the State of Israel. It is one of the institutions bringing Diaspora students to Israel which has continued to thrive through this period, because of its educational mission. We teach Judaism. We teach Zionism. But we also teach humanistic and universal values. That is why our students bring food to elderly Jews and clothing to impoverished Arabs, just as Ben and Marla did."

In reflection, Rabbi Landes said, "I am struggling through this week to find a way to merge Din and Rachamim, (Talmudic terms for judgement and mercy). I look for answers even when they don't readily appear. It is the way we teach at Pardes."

Pardes Institute of Jewish Studies

PRESS STATEMENT

Marla Bennett and Ben Blutstein Were Outstanding Students at Pardes

August 2, 2002, Jerusalem, Israel The Pardes Institute of Jewish Studies suffered the tragic loss of two students yesterday in the bombing at Hebrew University. They are Benjamin Thomas Blutstein of Harrisburg, PA , age 25, and Marla Ann Bennett of San Diego, CA, age 24.

Director and Rosh Yeshivah of Pardes, Rabbi Daniel Landes issued the following statement:

"The families, the Pardes community and the Jewish world have suffered
a greivous loss.

We will always remember Ben as both a musical disc jockey and a brillant student of Torah who adeptly combined the many worlds of art, music and Torah with gentle humor and charm. Ben just celebrated his 25th birthday. He was a graduate of Dickinson College with a B.A. in Judaic Studies. He was active in Hillel. He has studied two years at Pardes and was entering the Pardes Educators Program.

We will remember Marla as a rising star in the field of informal and formal Jewish education. She possessed a wonderful approach to her fellow human beings who were drawn to her warmth and concern. She was as personally modest as she was talented. Marla was a graduate of the University of California at Berkeley, with a B.A. in Political Science and an English minor. She was active at Hillel, with experience as a JCC camp counselor as well as being a teacher at an afternoon Religious school. Marla spent two years studying at Pardes. In the last year she began her studies in the Pardes Educators Program.

Both Ben and Marla desired to help revolutionize Jewish Education through teaching Jewish text with openness and excitement."
